What an incredible day!
Congratulations to Pakistan’s Malala Yousafzai, 17 who, alongside India’s Kailash Satyarthi, has been awarded a 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for their struggles against the suppression of children and for young people’s rights, including the right to education.
Malala is the youngest recipient of this award to date. She came to global attention to years ago during her efforts to promote education for girls and Pakistan when she was shot in the head by the Taliban. She then took her campaign to the world stage. …
She was being considered for the prize last year but lost to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons. The committee received a record nominations for the 2014 prize. Each prize carries a monetary reward of 8 million Swedish kronor or $1.1 million to be divided among winners.
Here she is addressing the global announcement.
Today, the world salutes you Malala. And as you’ve said, this prize is not the end – but merely the beginning.
