10 Things That Successful Teachers are Always Thinking About

What does good teaching look like? Well – honestly, there’s no straight answer. Rather, great teaching can look very differently and is unique to each individual educator. But there are absolutely traits that great teachers all have in common. One of them – is that they are all highly reflective individuals. Despite tenure or how long they’ve been in the classroom, successful teachers, want to get better. They take time to reflect on their methods, their delivery, and the way they connect with their students. Reflection is necessary to uncover those weaknesses that can be strengthened with a bit of resolve and understanding. And they do so by asking themselves a serious of questions daily. Here are 10 critical ones:

1. Do I promote positive interactions between myself and my students, and
create an environment that respects, encourages and stimulates
learning?
2.  Do I provide effective feedback  to my students so that they too can grow and improve?
3.  Do I have a clear objective for each class/week? Do my students know the class’ “roadmap”?

4. Do I find ways to periodically check for understanding and adjust my teaching based on students’ learning needs?

5. Do I welcome change in my classroom and am I open to learning new tools?

6.  Do I implement classroom activities that encourage higher order thinking and learning?

7.  Am I consistent and fair in all my decision-making?

8.  Do I truly know my learners and differentiate my instruction in order to reach them all?

9. Do I listen to my students and provide emotional support when needed?

10.  Am I a master in my content area? What do I do to stay tooled and informed in my discipline?

Overall,  successful educators stay curious. They never stop asking questions. And they never stop learning. . .
